The fruit fly problem

Drosophilidae.Image via Wikipedia
Fruit flies have infested my home and I'm sick to death of them! We figured out the source-- an old pumpkin we've had since Halloween. I guess we thought it would have dried out by now and become a gourd. We were wrong.

The bugs will not go away, no matter which method we use to rid ourselves of the pests. We've concocted homemade traps using bits of rotten fruit in a jar with a plastic wrapped top, with little holes in the plastic for the flies to trap themselves in (and they can't get out, for whatever reason), we've taken to using "vacuusuction"-- a little method we created using the extension hose on a vacuum cleaner to suck the little buggers up mid-flight. But they continue to exist. We're gonna get some of that sticky paper today and see how that works. Ugh, they're driving me nuts.

UPDATE: I ended up calling Dan the Bug Man, an exterminator who I found on Yelp. I called him and left him a voice mail explaining the fruit fly situation and he called me back with instructions on how to get rid of them for good. He suggested making homemade traps with glass jars, saran wrap (with holes poked through so the buggers can get in, but they can't fly out), and rotting bananas. It worked, and we no longer have a situation!

Maureen Dowd

was on Larry King Live last night. I am a fan of her column on nytimes.com, but I've never heard her speak before. It's interesting to get to see someone on television whose words you would only see in print (and online). It's kind of disorienting, but I really enjoyed watching her interview with Larry King, and I feel like I understand her a lot better. She spoke of her struggle with the writing process, which I can relate to.

She said she was never a natural at writing, that it was always a process to get it out. Writing is tough work, I agree, but I feel like once I've started something, no matter if I know where I'm going with it or not, half of the job is done. Starting is the hardest for me. I don't understand how some people do it. I have to be absolutely moved by something to put it onto paper. The Larry King segment was enough to move me, because I could relate to Ms. Dowd, it made her more human to me. And listening to this successful woman tell her stories about being the last person in the office working against a deadline, turning in pieces at the last minute, gave me hope? Resolve? The thought that maybe I can do this?

At least I got one up on her-- she may have been a natural redhead at one point (who knows what she looked like 20 years ago) but she's definitely not now.... I like her anywayz.

Why you so jealous? Who gave you the right?

Take a sip...

You must have a lot of time on your hands. How about finding a hobby? You know, one other than spreading rumors and gossiping??

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I totally forgot I was on their mailing list (and I can't remember the last time I listened to their first EP or Fever To Tell), but hey guys! Guess what?!

YEAH YEAH YEAHS HAVE A NEW RECORD!!!

I didn't get their second LP, so I'm not sure what to expect. But knowing Karen O. (I can say this because I've met her several times, and one time I caught her puking her guts out at the First Unitarian Church before the YYY set) I think it will most likely be decent.

Hint: It's insidious.
