The rest is still unwritten

I can't believe I cried during the series finale of The Hills. I know I'm a softie and I will start tearing up when I watch a sad commercial (those Sarah McLaughlin SPCA commercials get me every time), so this isn't so unusual. The thing is, I used to make fun of my mom and my sister for watching The Hills and swore I would never view such garbage. Well, I did start watching the show this year, and with a passion. Even though I started in its final season, in a weird way I felt some connection to the show's "characters."

Scripted or not, it can be pretty damn funny. It's a shame that Heidi and Spencer didn't get more airtime with their emotional breakdowns and freak-outs. What was up with the crystals they kept rubbing? "This one will keep you safe if you're in a war zone," Heidi said to some innocent bystander in a night club, who could only look perplexed in response. There may be people out there who are like the people on The Hills, but I don't know any famous young socialites so watching was a wonderment to me. What's it like to be rich, have an amazing wardrobe, and be famous for not really doing anything? It must be nice.

I think what I'll miss most about The Hills moving on is Joel McHale of The Soup making fun of the Hollywood-hipsters. And "Stephanie Pratt: Unlikely Voice of Reason," oh so young and wise-- she was probably the show's best cast member. Oh well, I'm sure all the Hills-dwellers will find work in other reality-based pursuits, and I'm sure MTV has yet another kooky show about rich people living obtuse existences up its sleeve somewhere.
