Imitation is flattery, but is this too much? Song ripoffs...

I heard this song on the radio the other day and thought it was a remix of a song by The Smiths. Try singing the lyrics to "How Soon Is Now?" to the beat in the song posted below.

"I am the son and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar,
I am the son and the heir of nothing in particular."

The song is "Take the World" by a contemporary band called She Wants Revenge. I'm sure there are very influenced by 80s British rock music, and that is fine, but I seriously thought it was The Smiths the first time I heard the song.

Regardless, the song has a cool sound, and it's not even nearly as much of a ripoff as Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" was of Madonna's "Express Yourself," nor it as hokey as the Katy Perry "California Gurls" ripoff of Kesha's "Tik Tok." It was as if Katy Perry didn't even care that she basically stole and repackaged Kesha's song. Oh, the derivatives...

I love picking out musical similarities. Have you noticed?
