Death of a king, RIP Steve Jobs.

Every once in a while I read a post that captures my mood, saying what I was thinking, but put into nicer sentences than I could muster. When my dad is the author of one of these posts, I like to repost them here.

The king is dead.

I owe this man my living. Without his genius I might as well still be a sign-painter in the North of England. He created wealth while becoming wealthy, making technology accessible to millions, demystifying computer druids, and opening career possibilities along the way.

True, his vision also helped close the door on old-school approaches to graphic design, music composition, creative writing, typesetting, publishing, film making, fashion design, and a host of other right and left brain activities. But in his day, Gutenberg also shut the door to the monastic monopoly of book production and we were all the more richer for it.

Likewise, the Industrial Revolution ended cottage crafts such as lace making and traditional weaving, while giving rise to cultural centers and cities, and the fledgling postal service effectively ended the sealing wax business. What's my point?

My point is, Steve Jobs is a giant... and his genius shall be greatly missed.
